Coming Home Again

Hey!! Sorry for the delay in returning to the blog since I got back, I've been really busy. Got back on Tuesday night at about 8:00 and slept till wednesday at about 9:00 at night. Then I had to get back to school and start catching up on the tons of work I've missed, and my boyfriend took me to see MGMT as a surprise on Thursday night, so I've been ridiculously busy and so exhausted. Anyway, Japan was amazing! I'll post my photos early next week when I finally upload them. Tokyo was awesome, although I would've liked a little more time there, we didn't get that much time to shop. I did buy some things though, two dresses, two scarves, a bag and a little pocket-watch necklace, which is so cute. I'll post photos of new things and some outfit photos from the past few days when I get round to it. It's my birthday tomorrow, so the next week is going to be just as busy as the last few, with various celebrations going on :) so I can't see regular blogging resuming properly till the week after next. Keep checking back though :)

Tokyo Tokyo Tokyo!

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, I've been up to my neck in work and it's not looking to die down any time soon as I've just switched from chemistry to media studies, because chemistry was awful. So I'm now doing English Literature, Art, Biology and Media, hoping to do something related to fashion buying at university. Anyway, I've missed nearly two months of the Media course so I'm going to have some catching up to do after half term. But the perks outweigh the workload, we're going to see the new coen brothers film, Burn After Reading at the new Leicester cinema, and we're also going to some sort of fashion and film festival later this year, awesome.

Anyway, I won't be blogging for a while as Im off to Japan in the morning on an exchange program for 12 days, so I won't be back here for about two weeks, but you can follow my blog on bloglovin', and be notified when I start posting again.

I'm going to stay with my exchange partner Shotaro for a week, and then I'm going to Tokyo to stay in a youth hostel for a few days. I'm so excited! The exchange school is in Fukushima which is near the Sendai area, which I'm going to on Sunday for shopping. I'm really looking forward to experiencing the Japanese culture and going to a Japanese school, but I'm really nervous about meeting his family and having to introduce myself in front of the whole school in Japanese! I think it's going to be an amazing experience, and I can't wait for Tokyo! I've always wanted to go there. Does anybody have any suggestions for the best places to shop? I'd really appreciate it.

Beautiful Boots

I bought these gorgeous boots on Friday, they're perfect. The leather is soft and smooth, the heel is just the right thickness and height, the buckles are fierrrce and they were only £20 from internacionale. I think I'll be wearing them all winter long.

I've been on a bit of a shopping spree lately and now I'm all out of cash, so it's a good thing my education allowance is going to kick in at the end of the week and i'll get backpayed for the whole time i've been doing my course, and I'm babysitting this weekend = top dollar = a shopping spree in Nottingham with the bf after I get back from Japan (oh yeah! I'm leaving for my Japanese Exchange for 12 days next Thursday ahhh!)

So yeah, I went to Nottingham last Saturday with the bf after he rescued me from a disastrous Friday night (basically I was at a flat party and the police got called and everyone got kicked out and I was in a park outside the flats with a bunch of strange drunk/influenced by other substances teenagers and eventually managed to get hold of my white knight who came and saved me before the riot van arrived and then bought me chips at 1:30am isn't he wonderful? everyone send thankful thoughts his way please.) Anyway, we went to Nottingham and it was lovely, visited little vintage shop Cow and then attempted to find the massive Vintage Warehouse to no avail, better luck next time. Anyway I bought this hat in Cow, isn't it adorable? I feel like a goat herder :)

And I got some fierce wrist candy. It's a little pathetic right now, but I will increase the number of angry-looking accesories to make dresses and cardigans less twee.

Then this afternoon my mum and I went shopping for slippers, as apparantly I have to wear slippers at the school in Japan, and at the home of my exchange student, one pair for each. We ended up charity shopping and high street shopping too, and I picked up a few things. Found this lovely bag for £1 in Salvation Army, isn't it a lovely colour? I also bought a lilac cardigan for 50p which I forgot to take a photo of, but you can probably imagine.

I got this dip-dye cardigan in the George Sale for £2, it'll nice for throwing over white tees when I can't be bothered.

Bought this star-print tea dress in MK one which i usually avoid like the plague, but turns out this wasn't actually an MK one product, it was a dress from a collection of another brand they were selling. When I saw Kate Moss in that starry dress in January, I told myself I wasn't going to buy into the star trend that she dragged back in. But many months have passed, and this dress is flattering and pretty and will cheer up dreary Mondays at school.

And finally, the slippers I went into town for in the first place, aren't they cute? £4 at peacocks, really comfy too.

Well black never went out, it's a fashion failsafe, always always looks good. I love the girl on the left in the first photo's chunky black scarf, I'm looking for one just like it to fall asleep in on those cold winter morning bus journeys to school. I also love the black coat in the second photo, great sleeves, perfect hood, especially with those black leggings. Why is it that as soon as I get back to school in September I start yearning to only wear dark colours and layers, I guess I just prefer winter dressing to summer. The power of layering I suppose.

A Level Chemistry and Biology requires students to have a lab coat of their very own for practicals (experiments, dissections and the like). I purchased mine today :D isn't it fancy? It's a little large but I love it (such a geek!) I plan to customise it when I have time. I'm thinking my name in sequins on the back, and the extreme use of fabric paint. When you're getting dressed at 7am and all you can see out of your window is darkness and fog, the only things you want to wear are thick oversized cardigans, skinny jeans, a chunky cable-knit scarf and comfy boots. I have two pairs of boots, but neither could possibly be as invitingly soft and comfortable as Minnetonkas. I've wanted some for months and months, yet unfortunately, not having a job renders me unable to spend more than £20 on shoes and the black minnetonkas of my dreams happen to be £62. But hopefully I'm getting a job soon which will leave me with enough money to buy all the yummy boots I want *fingers crossed*. Anyway, I found a mock pair on Topshop.com for only £28, they're not as winter-morning-comfortable as I'd want, and I'd much prefer a boot version, but I'm still considering buying them. What do you think? buy these now, or save up for the real boots of suede-y goodness?

As I was browsing the Minnetonka website, I came across these flats, which i recongised from my mum's wardrobe. She's had them since before I was born I'm sure. I always thought they were severely uncool when i was younger, but I'm growing to like them. Pity she's a size 3 and I can't steal her shoes. She has some seriously badass heels that she hasn't worn since her 20s.

I know you're out there. Expect outfit posts this week, I plan to post photos of a couple of last week's less mundane outfits. I'm going to try to take more care in the way that I dress for school each day. It's difficult to dress with some flair at 7am on a monday morning when you just want to go back to bed. However I do find that a whole morning of Chemistry goes by easier when I know I'm not wearing the 'uniform' of hoodies,blue jeans and uggs. Also, I'm finally getting a haircut on Thursday, I was thinking of going for a dramatic change and getting a fringe, à la Karla. What do you think?

The novelty of being able to wear my own clothes to school hasn't worn off yet, but I've found that I don't have many wearable dresses, and none of my skirts are suitable for school, and I'm sick of wearing jeans most days. Therefore I'm looking for some affordable dresses that I can wear with wool tights, boots and chunky cardigans for the colder weather, a la The Edge Of Love. So I was looking around the internet and found a whole bunch that I like at Topshop, but of course at £50 a pop they're a bit out of my jobless price range. So I guess I'll have to look around the lower-end high street stores for similar ones, as I want a few. These were my favourite.

The most amazing thing about these images is that they aren't photoshop collages, he only uses photoshop "to finesse details and to adjust color and contrast for printing." The Built By Wendy Fall Collection is just gorgeous, it has everything I love about dressing for the colder weather; long boots, fine knits, corduroy pinafores, check shirts and black dresses. Back to School

I go back on the 3rd, which I'm really not looking forward to as I have work to do and books to read, and I haven;t done any of it, even though I've had nearly 3 months off. Anyway, I'm going to go shopping for some back to school items next week and this editorial from Glamour August 08 show the kind of items I'll be looking for. Denim, checked shirts, blouses, cardigans, and trench coats are going to be my autumn/winter uniform.

I'm also looking for some 40s inspired chunky knits, teadresses and woolly tights, as in The Edge Of Love which I havent seen yet, but everyone and their mother has blogged about Keira and Sienna's wardrobe's for the film. If you go to the official website for the film, they have a 'Get The Look' section, which informs us that The Edge Of Love has teamed up with Oasis to create some 40s inspired pieces, so I'll have a look and report my findings.

I went to my favourite vintage shop Cow today, I could really spend endless days in there, sigh. I bought several things, I planned to take pictures of them all, but my camera died after just one outfit, so I'll post the rest over the next few days. Here is what I wore today, except the trilby and the braces are new and I wore my white oxfords too. The braces are so cool, they have little pints of beer all over them, love it. I also bought an oversized bryan adams 1996 world tour shirt and cut the sleeves off, an ironic take on metal shirts. And I bought some white shiny leggings, they were only £2, brilliant, and a green dress which needs shortening because it's shin-length at the moment. I'll post more photos over the next few days.

In southern Namibia, a few kilometres inland from the port of Luderitz, lies the ghost town of Kolmanskop. In 1908, diamonds were discovered in the deserts near Luederitz and German expatriates rushed into Namibia hoping to make an easy fortune. Within two years, Kolmanskop was a booming mining town, complete with a school, casino, hospital, bowling alley and power station. But shortly after the drop in diamond sales after the First World War, the beginning of the end started. During the 1950's the town was deserted and the dunes began to reclaim what was always theirs. Many houses were built and decorated in beautiful colours, perhaps to offset the lonely desert surroundings. However, by 1928, after the end of the first world war, diamond sales had dropped and the town was abandoned, leaving the dunes to reclaim the town.

These photos taken by Richard Ehrlich in 2003 show how beautiful and lonely this ghost town really is. How the skeletal houses still stand, the sand-filled rooms shifting as the wind changes.

It was J's birthday on tuesday so we went for a picnic yesterday in a national trust park nearby. It was huge and beautiful, I could spend every day there. There was a big lake with swans, and it was just gorgeous. We ate lots of crips and birthday cake, and drank lots of pear cider and shloer. It was a lovely day.
I wore a grey/silver dress from vero moda, it was my first time wearing it and it's the perfect dress for a picnic. It was such a hot day, so the silk and linen blend was light and comfortable, and it's just so pretty!

Yesterday I went exploring on my bike, and found some wonderful places. It was so quiet and relaxing, just what I needed. I found a bridge and really want to know where it leads to, but I didn't want to get too lost, so I'll go back another day and explore further. It was such a hot day, I didn't need the sheer white tights. I think all outfit photos will have to be in beautiful locations like this from now on :)

It was pretty hot last Tuesday, so I debuted these secondhand high-waisted black shorts and my lovely comfy gladiators.

Don't get me wrong

After my brother's graduation last Monday, my sister and I decided to stay on in Liverpool until Thursday. That was lovely, we planned to explore the city, visit Penny Lane and the like, but that didn't happen when we discovered the new shopping centre. It was basically two pure days of shopping, and I got some lovely white oxfords amongst other things.

We also discovered a fabulous shop called Pull and Bear, and their even more fabulous sale! They had tons of fantastic t-shirts for less than a fiver each and jeans for about 8 pounds, it was great. I'm a bit low on cash right now, so all I got was the bag in the above photo and a t-shirt, which I wore the next day and will be featured in my next post, an outfit post finally! I ended up trying on quite a few things in that wonderful shop, including this dress and t-shirt. You can't see the t-shirt very well, but it said 'things I love' and had little drawings of cups of tea and biscuits and sunglasses and things, very sweet. I'll definitely be going back to that shop, I'm hoping to visit Liverpool again later in the summer.

Anyway, I apologise for the lack of posts after getting back from Liverpool on Thursday, I've had quite a busy weekend. On friday night I went to the cinema and dinner, and on Saturday I went to a friend's gig in Lincoln, followed by late night pizza and chips at a place called 'American Fried Chicken' where none of the workers were even English, let alone American, and a couple started having a domestic (there were shrieks of 'TELL ZENNA I'M GONNA KILL HER!'), very classy. Then Sunday I was at work followed by a visit by relatives.
Today I plan to pack a good book, some snacks and my art sketchbook, and go exploring the local countryside on my bike, I need to look for a field suitable for a picnic for a friend's birthday and I also need to begin my a-level art project entitled 'delicate and strong'. Summer feels good :)

I went to lunch with J today, and bought this vest. I shouldn't be shopping because I have to buy J a birthday present (his birthday is the 22nd), but I've wanted a leopard print vest for a while, and I know I'll wear it. It was £7 in the shop, but I just looked online and it's £3 in the online sale, pfft, I really should do more online shopping.

Gok's Fashion Fix

I just watched Gok's Fashion Fix with Gok Wan and Alexa Chung, and it was actually pretty good. I admit I totally sat down to watch it with my mind made up that it would be awful with a man I hate telling me about 'fashion', which I assumed he knew nothing about. Even though Gok was still the most annoying thing on the planet, Alexa Chung is fun and I like Kelly Osbourne, she was a guest.

There were several different parts of the show. First there was a catwalk showdown, inspired by the sex and the city film, where Gok takes high street items to create a runway outfit with a budget of £200 and four designer buyers put together outfits with a limitless budget. Gok's outfits were kind of a bust, they weren't that inspirational, and frankly looked a bit shite. Whereas the designer outfits were definitely put together better, and the pieces chosen better, with the exception of the pucci dress, I really really don't like pucci dresses.

Then Alexa covered the A/W Chanel haute couture show in Paris, and met Karl Lagerfeld, the interview was pretty amazing, I always love to hear his point of view. I also enjoyed Alexa's personal style, as always.

Gok wan also visited Edinborough as part of his quest to find someone with the best street style in Britain. This was pretty good as it was the kind of fashion I enjoy, real personal style. Except it was slightly spoiled by Gok's shrieks of 'you look fabulous darling!'

Overall, it was pretty good, and I would recommend it, apart from the ever-present, ever-annoying Gok and some bad high street outfits, It fills an hour slot that you might have spent staring at the wall.

Last Thursday I celebrated my prom at a nice hotel nearby, I had a great time, although in my opinion a dancefloor about the size of an en suite bathroom isn't quite big enough. But it was a lovely night all the same.

My parents insisted on taking the usual photos of me and my date in our garden...

Square America is a website that showcases one person's collection of vintage photographs. These photographs show both the way life was lived in the first three quarters of the twentieth century and also gives a history of photography in this era. The photographs are organised into many 'shows' with titles such as 'A Brief Essay On Love', 'On Beauty (and it's discontents)' and more simple collections such as 'Dance' and 'The Road'.

This is an extremely beautiful collection which I could spend hours exploring, I hope you enjoy these captured moments in time as much as I did.

So this post is just to say that my Japanese exchange student left yesterday afternoon so I'm going to be back to blogging full time, which is both sad and happy news

My Japanese exchange student, Shotaro, arrived today. He is very sweet and speaks english a little, so we can sort of structure conversations :) it's fun. He is so polite and brought presents for me and my family. He gave my family some really cool Japanese sweets and a book of Japanese photographs and prints. He brought me a kimono from Uniqlo, it's so lovely, but the instructions to put it on cover two pages :)

Honey, I'm home!

I feel like I've been gone for a lifetime, so many blogs to catch up on (see right!) and a lot of blogging to do. I may not be back to regular blogging until the 7th of July, as my Japanese exchange student is arriving on Sunday, I'm so excited! Apparantly I got it wrong and Aikawa is his last name, so confusing. Anyway, my holiday was lovely, I got ridiculous tan lines and a monkey jumped on me!

Schools out!

Today I did my last two exams, so schools out for summer! Which means I'll have a lot more time to dedicate this blog, except not properly and regularly till July, as I'm going on holiday on Friday night till the 23rd and then I have a Japanese exchange student coming to stay. He's called Aikawa, how exciting :)

Oh boo for lack of posts. I'm such a bad blogger right now, and sadly it won't improve for a while, I have exams until wednesday, then I'm going on holiday on Friday night for 10 days. But from the 23rd it will be regular posts all the way.

Anyway, today was such a lovely day, me and my mum decided to venture into the attic to rummage for any vintage clothes. We found so much, some lovely lovely things which I'll get photos of in the next couple of days, some of it needs altering though, which gives me a good chance to practice my (lack of) textiles skills. We also found all my old baby clothes, bags and bags of them, tiny little socks and cardigans and little pinafores, so lovely. There were also lots of my parents old cards and letters and photographs and things, it was like thrifting in the attic, but more personal as all these lovely things had belonged to my parents. Oh I can't wait to show you some of the things I found! My favourite was a small dark purple clutch which I'll use as a purse, it has a little matching coin purse inside too :)

In other news, I went shopping again on Friday, I really really should stop or at least cut down, I picked up some loreal true match foundation, which is actually really good, the best I've had, it gives my skin a lovely rosy glow :) I also bought a top, exactly the same style as the ice cream one except it's purple with no ice creams, and I got these shoes from new look which were reduced to £7, bargain!

Although the internet is packed full of female style bloggers from the lesser known gems (Style Rookie, The Stylish Wanderer) to the practically celebrity blogs (Fashion Toast, Liebemarlene Vintage, Childhood Flames) there is a severe lack of decent male blogging going on. I adore The Sartorialist's focus on men's style, and I'm excited about sites such as chictopia.com and lookbook.nu giving the male species the opportunity to post outfit photographs, but I'm looking for more than street style here, I'm looking for articles, and insight into a male view of style. And today, I think I found it. Browsing through Thom Wong's blog, thesundaybest.org, I found not only his outfit photos (with the ingenious theme of 'Domestic Bliss') but also well-written articles on various style-related topics, packed with wit and a genuinely interesting point of view. Plus I'm loving his homemade versions of the tatty devine necklaces :)

Bows, bows, bows!

Browsing style.com yesterday I realised how I really don't own enough bow-related items. On the Fall Ready-to-wear runways bows were everywhere. And I can't wait to see how the high street stores interpret these looks.

I would so buy this dress if an almost-exact copy was released somewhere like Topshop, although I can see it would probably sell out immediately and then filter into Primark in cheap material and look pretty disgusting. But I so want a dress like this for this Christmas, especially with the Behnaz Sarafpour simple hair and smoky eyes. I'm keeping my eyes peeled (I hate that expression, my mum used to use it all the time) for a dress like this to appear on the high street pretty soon.

Bow ties are so cute, but I probably wouldn't be able to pull one off for fear of strange looks and feeling like my granddad. If I had a bow like this one, or like flying saucer's recently purchased one, I'd definately just use it as a simple hair bow. I also like how the bow effect is doubled here, obvious as a bow tie, and then more subtle in the neckline of the jacket.

I love this so much! It's like an extra prettified trench :) I definately want this to be my winter coat. Topshop please rip this off? It'd make my season :)

I have around a 87634784 blazers but I reckon I could make room for this in my wardrobe. Especially paired with coloured booties and a black bodycon AA skirt/dress. The perfect ridiculous amount of girlyness added to an otherwise masculine piece, love it.

Todays outfit was inspired by Sally Jane Vintage, she has such cute rompers :) I dug one out of my mum's old wardrobe a few weeks ago and decided to debut it today when I went shopping, it's so comfy! A bit of a pain in the changing rooms though, having to take the whole thing off when I'm only trying on some shorts or a tee. I really need to get a brown belt, it'd make this outfit ten times more put-together.

Pyjamas for day

Yesterday, James Danziger of the wonderfully inspiring, The Year In Pictures posted an editorial on men's pyjamas for day, from men's fashion magazine Fantastic Man, which I had never heard of before reading the post. Jodie Barnes (stylist for the shoot) paired the pyjamas with sports jackets and trench coats, which worked really well. The photographs by Daniel Riera are relaxed and natural, making a convincing case for wearing pyjamas for day. Personally, I'd love to be able to pull off wearing pyjamas in the daytime. Of course I'd have to pick up a slightly oversized flannel/checked pair from the men's department, and a trench of course. But I think this look would only work for men, as I have seen many a girl walking round Asda in Liverpool wearing pyjamas, and it doesn't look too classy. Oh well, I have yet to be proven wrong, and I shall keep browsing Flickr's 'Pyjamas worn in the day' pool (oh yes! there is a pool dedicated to this!) for inspiration on how to make this look work for women, watch this space!

Skin deep

I found this amazing photograph yesterday morning, and couldn't stop looking at it. The textures are so amazing.

Anyway, I'm no photographer, but I was bored and curious about my own skin after my bath yesterday, so I recorded it at it's fairly young age. The textures on mine obviously aren't as good, I might have a play around on photoshop to see what I can come up with.

Those last ones are my shoulders I think. I wanted to get the water droplets in. Yeah, I get really bored sometimes. I think it'd be cool if I did photos like this every few years, to record the aging process. Maybe I will, watch this space.

I hate exams

Exams have started, so I won't really have time to post until they're over (June 11th) Meanwhile, I'ver been searching for a prom dress, anyone seen any nice ones? I was going to get one off ebay or etsy, but I'd rather be able to try it on first as dresses have a horrible habit of not suiting me at all. I want one thats different from everyone elses, preferably vintage, but that'd be online and I already explained that issue. Hmm :/ should get a move on with finding one
Also, I'm going on holiday to spain from June 14th till the 23rd, so I'll need to go holiday shopping. I'll post any new things when I get round to it.
I've already decided that in the summer I'm going to dedicate a lot more time to this blog, improve it, and hopefully get actual readers. rather than visitors who probably don't read, seeing as i get about 100 visits a day and about 0 comments.
Anyway, back to revision!

So today was really really sunny, and after a few torturous hours at work, I decided to get dressed into something summery and go for a walk. But it wasn't all relaxation, I took my spanish revision with me, exams start next week! argh! But anyway, it was really hot today, really hot for the uk, it got to about 30 I reckon.
